Step 1: You Brush Your Teeth

Step 2: You Wash Your Face

Most mainstream face washes contain something called microbeads — or did, until they were banned in several countries including the UK and US after researchers discovered they were passing straight through water treatment systems and into the ocean.

The bans were a genuine win. But microbeads were only part of the story.

Many face washes, exfoliants, and cleansers still contain synthetic polymers as texture agents, emulsifiers, or film-forming ingredients — just in forms that haven't attracted the same legislative attention yet. Ingredients like polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon-12, and acrylates copolymer appear in skincare products under names that most consumers would never recognise as plastic.

The skin is not an impermeable barrier. Particularly on the face, where the skin is thinner and more sensitive, what you apply has a pathway inward.

Step 3: You Shower — and Shampoo Your Hair

Synthetic fragrances in shampoos, conditioners, and shower gels are often carried in polymer-based delivery systems designed to help the scent last longer on your hair and skin. These are sometimes listed as "fragrance" — a catch-all term that can legally conceal dozens of individual chemical compounds, some of which are polymer-derived.

Beyond fragrance, many shampoos contain silicones — a family of synthetic polymer compounds used to make hair feel smooth and shiny. Dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, and amodimethicone are the most common. Silicones aren't classified as microplastics in the same way nylon fragments are, but they are synthetic polymers applied directly to the scalp — the skin with some of the highest absorption rates in the body due to its rich blood supply and high density of hair follicles.

They also don't biodegrade. They accumulate in waterways and have been detected in fish tissue and river sediment worldwide.

Step 4: You Moisturise (and Apply SPF)

Sunscreens and moisturisers are among the most polymer-dense products in the average bathroom. Film-forming agents that help sunscreen stay on the skin, spread evenly, and resist water are frequently synthetic polymers. Ingredients like polyacrylamide, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and various PEG compounds appear regularly in both daily moisturisers and dedicated SPF products.

PMMA in particular has been studied as a microplastic concern — it's a synthetic polymer used in sunscreens and foundations to create a smooth, blurring effect on the skin. The particles are intentionally small. That's the problem.

A 2021 report by the European Chemicals Agency found that intentionally added microplastics — including those in cosmetics and personal care products — release an estimated 36,000 tonnes of microplastics into the environment per year across the EU alone. Much of that comes from what we wash off our faces and bodies every morning.

Step 5: You Apply Deodorant

Most mainstream deodorants and antiperspirants are applied to an area of the body with a very high concentration of lymph nodes and some of the thinnest, most absorbent skin on the body — the underarm.

Many contain synthetic fragrance compounds, propylene glycol (a petroleum derivative used as a moisturising agent and carrier), and various polymer-based thickeners and film formers.

The underarm is also a place where many people shave regularly, further increasing skin permeability. What you apply here has a more direct route into your lymphatic system than almost anywhere else on your body.


The Cumulative Picture of Morning Plastic Exposure

Taken individually, each of these exposure points might seem manageable. But this is where the concept of cumulative exposure becomes important.

You're not choosing between one source of synthetic polymer exposure and zero. You're navigating a morning routine where every single step — brushing, washing, shampooing, moisturising, applying deodorant — involves some form of synthetic material coming into contact with or entering your body. Researchers studying microplastic exposure have started using a concept called the total daily intake — an attempt to quantify exposure across all routes simultaneously. The numbers are striking. One widely cited estimate suggests the average person ingests or absorbs the equivalent of a credit card's worth of plastic every week, when all sources are accounted for.

Your morning routine is not the only source. But it is one of the most controllable ones. Unlike the microplastics in agricultural soil, in tap water, or in the air in urban environments — sources you have limited power over — your bathroom is a space where you make deliberate choices every day.


Why This Doesn't Get Talked About

Here's the honest answer: the personal care industry is worth over $500 billion globally. "Silicone-enhanced." "Polymer-locked colour." "Advanced polymer technology." These are selling points, not warnings.

Regulatory frameworks haven't kept pace with the science. The microbead bans of the mid-2010s were a genuine step forward, but they addressed only the most visible and easily identifiable form of intentional microplastic in personal care products. The polymer-based emulsifiers, film formers, and texture agents that remain in hundreds of mainstream products exist in a regulatory grey area that hasn't been resolved.
